Fitness is a HUGE part of roller derby. I also think that it is an imperative part of the learning process. Not only do you need to know about the rules and strategy of Roller Derby, you also need to know what is good and bad for your body.
Roller Derby, as a sport, has possibly the most diverse body type of any other sport. Anyone can play. Tall, short, big, small.. it doesn’t matter. Because of this, you usually have many people that have never played sports or been active before. This can be dangerous if these new people do not understand fitness. There are many aspects to this, and I will try and add them as I come across them.
Derby has helped me learn a lot about myself and a lot about my body. It’s even kept me in a gym for a year (and counting), which is more than I can say for anything else I’ve tried. I’m going to try and share my knowledge, but if I get confusing, ramble, miss a point, or am just plain wrong, please feel free to comment or question me.
Don’t just take my word (or anyone else’s) for it though, please research on your own! If you have aches, pains, moans & groans, do a quick Google search. Find some symptoms. Over the years, I’ve heard horrible advice given to injured/sore athletes that didn’t know any better. Always research. When it comes to your body, you can never ever know too much.
If it wasn’t for your body, you’d never be able to play derby. So say thank you to it by knowing it inside and out.
